Funeral de um lavrador (Funeral of a worker) is a song inspired from the book Morte e Vida severina by the Brazilian writer João Cabral de Melo Neto, written between 1954 and 1955 and published in 1955. The name of the book is an allusion to the suffering faced by the character. The book presents a dramatic poem, which recounts the hard trajectory of a sertanejo migrant (retirante) in search of an easier and more favorable life in the capital of Pernambuco. In 1965, Roberto Freire, director of the TUCA theater at PUC de São Paulo, asked the then very young Chico Buarque to set the work to music. The work was partially adapted to cinema in 1977 by Zelito Viana with the participation of, among others José Dumont in the role of Severino, Sebastião Vasconcelos as Mestre Carpina and Tânia Alves. This song was sung and adapted in many different versions all around the world. This version by Zelia Barbosa backed by guitar and percussion, turns popular music into a vehicle of expression and action for the Brazilian people.
