The University of Washington said the visas of five current students and four recent graduates in post-graduation training were canceled by the federal government without prior notice to the university or the students. University officials said in a statement that there was no indication the visas were canceled due to activism or other protected free speech. They also said they were unaware of any immigration officials coming to UW campuses in connection with the visas. The university said on Monday that it will continue to support and provide the resources needed for the students to succeed. “We are deeply concerned about the well-being of these students and graduates and are working to support them. International students and scholars are essential and valued members of our University, and they contribute immensely to our community, state, and nation,” the statement said. The school said the federal government’s Student & Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) shows the cancellations were due to an immigration status violation, but no further details were provided. -------------------------------------------------- For more on the story: https://komonews.com/news/local/uw-un... _______________ Stay up to date with our social media: KOMO News on Facebook: / komonews KOMO News on Twitter: / komonews KOMO News on Instagram: / komo4 KOMO News on TikTok: / komo4seattle Subscribe to KOMO on YouTube: / @komonews Watch more top local news stories: • Video For all of the day’s top local and national news, visit http://www.komonews.com/ Watch our live newscasts and other live video at https://komonews.com/watch Download our iOS App: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/komo-... In such situations, a UW campus’ international student services office would quickly contact the affected students to provide them with resources such as legal services, and mental health and academic support. School officials said they have been checking SEVIS records daily because the federal government is not telling universities about students’ status changes. In February, dozens of demonstrators rallied on UW's Seattle campus to protest immigration arrests and detentions happening in western Washington and called for protections for migrant students on campus. Late Tuesday, Seattle University also said three graduate students had visas cancelled. Governor Bob Ferguson had a long planned meeting with UW President Ana Mari Cauce on Tuesday and issued a statement to KOMO News that read “Students come from all over the world to study at Washington’s top-tier colleges and universities. I spoke with President Cauce today about the revocation of visas for UW students. We are closely monitoring the situation and seeking more information." The UW International Student Services Department suggested the situation involved F-1 and J-1 visas and that "If you need to travel internationally, carefully review our Travel Outside the U.S. information to be prepared for requirements and potential delays or challenges you could encounter upon re-entry. You are also encouraged to register your international travel with Global Affairs." UW spokesperson Victor Balta declined a request for an on-camera interview and asked for written questions about the situation. He added "The university has no role in removing students from campus. To my knowledge, no one has been physically removed from campus and the university would not be involved in any such process." #komo #komonews #komo4 #komo4news #seattle #seattlenews #washingtonnews #migrants #immigrants #immigration #border #borderpatrol #cbp #uw #seattleu #college #indian #chinese #china #india #taiwan #japan #mexico #canada #university #students #israel #palestine #israelpalestinewar #war #hamas #hamasisrael #israelhamas #gaza Chris Daniels This video and all Sinclair Broadcast Group content archives of local news and sports coverage are available for your use.
