John Reardon tells the story behind the story of his first book, 'Patek Philippe in America Marketing the World's Foremost Watch.' For many years, John had been passionately collecting old vintage Patek Philippe ads when he happened to attend a talk by Jeff Bezos describing how he built Amazon initially by selling books. Inspiration struck and John realized he could use his extensive collection of vintage ads, brochures and product photographs to illustrate a book about the history of Patek Philippe in America and how it marketed itself from the 19th century, decade by decade, until the end of the 1980s. Encouraged by Patek Philippe owner Philippe Stern, and after a lot of hard work and different formats, the book was eventually published 15 years ago and has become a go-to reference book for watch collectors.
