This was recorded live at the Capital Jazz Society performance on May 26th featuring the Masa Ishikawa Piano Trio at the Storm Cellar in Lincoln Nebraska. Tune: Tuk Tuk original composition by Masa Ishikawa (2013) Masayoshi Ishikawa, originally from Aizu Wakamatsu in Fukushima, Japan, is a jazz pianist, composer, and educator who began his musical journey singing in choirs before moving to Seattle in 2003 to study music and discover his passion for jazz piano. He has performed at jazz festivals around the world, including in Italy, China, Japan, and the U.S., and was a finalist in the 2016 Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition. Masa is also an accomplished composer, with his piece Hotaru winning the 2014 Downbeat Student Music Award, and his 2019 debut album Dialogue featuring ten original compositions. His music often blends traditional jazz with unique instrumentation, as seen in Haseru, a 2021 work commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 2011 Japan tsunami, and Suite for the Forgotten, a 2015 jazz orchestra piece honoring those affected by the Fukushima nuclear disaster. He currently teaches at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota, where he directs jazz ensembles and teaches applied jazz piano. The Trio includes Bobby Scharmann on bass, and Justin G Jones on drums. They will be performing Ishikawa's original compositions as well as the repertories from The Great American Songbook and various jazz standards.
