TODAY IN QUEER TV HISTORY BROTHERS AND SISTERS: "Moral Hazard" - 5/4/2008, ABC In the 2000s, when US broadcast TV tended to keep queer characters single, or else filmed their stories in apologetic, distancing ways, this excellent ensemble family drama told the love story of regular characters Kevin and Scotty in the same matter-of-fact way it handled its heterosexual couples' stories. Here, Kevin (Matthew Rhys) proposes to Scotty (Luke Macfarlane, now of BROS fame). Their wedding would be the centerpiece of the next episode, during the May ratings sweeps. In this clip, Kevin also mentions that his uncle, aged 70, has only just recently come out as gay. "He's missed his life entirely," Kevin says sadly. The uncle, too, was an ongoing character on the series, played by Ron Rifkin. The show's remarkable cast included Sally Field, Rob Lowe, Calista Flockhart, and Rachel Griffiths, among other well-known talented actors.
