Addressing officer shortage: Rochester Police Department alters recruitment campaign

Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) — Law enforcement agencies across the country are short on officers, including right here in Rochester. That's why the Rochester Police Department is trying a new method this year to recruit officers. RPD recruitment officers say their new campaign included creating a focus group consisting of officers with five years or less on the force, asking them what attracted them to the job. "City residents, they're calling 911 and they're waiting hours for officers to get there," explained recruitment officer Michelle Calderon. "It's not that we don't want to be there. It's just we can't be at many different places at once, so we are doing a disservice to the city of Rochester residents." RPD, which is currently understaffed by nearly 100 officers, created a new campaign video using interviews from the new recruitment-based focus group.
