Paint Feral Foal, was a call we received about a week into having Ranger home. The call started with "the foal has been laying in the same spot all morning"...This is not good We head up the hill, knowing the outcome might not be very good. Once we arrive, it's apparent the foal has extreme injuries. His shoulder has a large puncture wound, his leg has a puncture wound and his joints are all swollen and he can not walk very well. We know in our hearts this is not promising for survival; we also know he is not going to be left to die out on the range. We call for help to bring him to the horse trailer and load him up, at the same time we are calling the vet clinic to let them know we are bringing in a second foal to our appointment today (ranger we booked for his check up) The paint foal was in so much pain, he was easy to handle, very little resistance-almost like he knew we offered help Ranger was not happy about sharing his trailer with a new baby! off to the vet clinic we go... rangers check up was going very well, his heart sounds good, his lungs are clear, Vet pulls blood to test everything. We talked about the concern of his weak hind legs, the vet checks them out noting one fetlock is low. Once the blood results come back (took only minutes) everything (his blood cells), antibodies, his colostrum levels, were all above normal! YAAAAAA his hind legs are only needing to heal and be stronger with time Now onto the new Paint foal. We literally have had him now for an hour and half, we feel so much for him and his suffering. We know he must be in pain. The immediate concerns are the amount of damage to him, we hook him up to IV for fluids and pain management, assessing him the wounds are cleaned and probed..we decide to give him the night to see how he recoups through out the night.... The next morning, with more blood tests, it shows he has a raging infection through out his body. We are now mostly concerned about the swollen, large joints.. What are they? Whats his quality of life? His vet bill is already nearing the thousand mark and we know he might not make it - we give the go ahead to do one more test; the Joint Tap. We need to know for certain if bacteria has entered the joints. We get the call by the afternoon. The best choice for him is a pain free euthanasia, he has bacteria in every single joint and up to his stifle. The out come is poor for any quality of life, he would rapidly deteriorate and be unable to walk. We go back to pick his little body up and brought him back to the mountains to be buried.
