The inaugural HBCU Hoops Invitational (HBCU HI) was successfully held December 4–7, 2025, in Orlando, Florida at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports. As a national basketball invitational dedicated exclusively to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), the event elevated HBCU athletics through competitive sport, educational engagement, and cultural celebration on a premier national stage. Eight institutions—four women’s and four men’s programs—competed for the 2025 HBCU HI Championship, showcasing talent, school pride, and excellence in collegiate athletics. Congratulations to the Hampton University Women’s Team and the Florida A&M University (FAMU) Men’s Team for capturing the inaugural championship titles, marking a historic and memorable first year. Beyond competition, the Invitational delivered a holistic student-athlete and community experience. Signature programming included a Sports Symposium Fireside Chat for student-athletes, a College Fair connecting youth and families with HBCU institutions, and a Welcome Reception & Award Ceremony honoring legendary leaders and changemakers. Honorees included Coach C. Vivian Stringer and the 1982 Cheyney State Lady Wolves, Coach Clarence “Bighouse” Gaines of Winston-Salem State University, and Alonzo Mourning, recipient of the Bob Billingslea Legacy Award for his continued impact through the Overtown Youth Center. The presence of distinguished guests, including 99-year-old scholarship champion and HBCU alumna Mrs. Janie R. Robinson, further underscored the legacy and purpose of this initiative. We were proud to welcome leadership, alumni, coaches, student-athletes, and supporters from participating institutions including FAMU, Edward Waters, Florida Memorial, Bethune-Cookman, Tuskegee, Hampton, Livingstone, and Barber-Scotia, along with the support of Florida House Representative Leonard Spencer and dedicated HBCU advocates. This inaugural success was made possible through the vision and generosity of our donors and sponsors, including AdventHealth, Florida Blue, Disney on the Yard, ESPN Films, Andscape, Delta, Mielle, Spalding, and HoopCulture. We also extend sincere appreciation to the Wekiva High School Band for their dynamic performance and to the many partners, advisory council members, consultants, media teams, staff, and volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to bring this event to life. The HBCU Hoops Invitational is more than a tournament—it is a growing legacy platform that inspires youth, promotes educational pathways, and celebrates Black excellence in academics and athletics while positioning HBCUs as destinations for growth, heritage, and opportunity.
