Back then, technical limitations forced creativity: we composed using rudimentary trackers, where every note was manually coded, and every sound effect had to be optimized to avoid overloading memory. With the Commodore 64, I discovered the SID chip, a true gem for its time, allowing for richer, more expressive sounds. It was an era when demomakers pushed hardware to its limits, and music played a crucial role in the emotional impact of demos. Then came the Atari Falcon 030, a revolutionary machine that opened the door to more complex music, with advanced MIDI capabilities and much more faithful sound reproduction. It was an exciting time, where experimentation was at the heart of musical creation. Today, I have composed a song as a tribute to that era, which I titled "SID Vicious." The name is a nod to both the legendary SID sound chip of the Commodore 64 and Sid Vicious, the bassist of the Sex Pistols, a punk rock icon. There was a true punk spirit in the demomaker scene: we hacked machines, pushed boundaries, and created raw, innovative music without caring about conventions. This song celebrates that pioneering spirit of the ‘80s and ‘90s, the rise of computer-assisted music (MAO), and the unique atmosphere of that time—where every note was a line of code and every melody was a love letter to the machines. This is the April track ! Enjoy... EN FRANCAIS : Dès mes débuts sur Amstrad, j’ai été fasciné par la musique assistée par ordinateur. À l’époque, les limitations techniques forçaient la créativité : on composait avec des trackers rudimentaires, où chaque note était codée en dur, et où chaque effet sonore devait être optimisé pour ne pas surcharger la mémoire. Avec le Commodore 64, j’ai découvert le SID, un véritable bijou pour l’époque, qui permettait de créer des sons plus riches et expressifs. C’était une période où les demomakers repoussaient les limites du hardware, et où la musique jouait un rôle clé dans l’impact émotionnel des démos. Puis est venu l’Atari Falcon 030, une machine révolutionnaire qui ouvrait la voie à une musique plus complexe, avec des capacités MIDI avancées et un son beaucoup plus fidèle. C’était une époque excitante, où l’expérimentation était au cœur de la création musicale. Aujourd’hui, j’ai composé une chanson en hommage à cette période, que j’ai intitulée "SID Vicious". Ce nom est un clin d'œil à la fois au célèbre chip sonore du Commodore 64, le SID, et à Sid Vicious, le bassiste des Sex Pistols, symbole du mouvement punk. Car oui, il y avait un vrai esprit punk dans la scène demomaker : on détournait les machines, on repoussait les limites, et on créait une musique brute, innovante, sans se soucier des conventions. Cette chanson célèbre cet esprit pionnier des années 80 et 90, l’émergence de la MAO (musique assistée par ordinateur) et l’ambiance unique de cette époque, où chaque note était une ligne de code et chaque mélodie une déclaration d’amour aux machines.
