Gottlieb was the brains behind MKUltra, a mind control program, in the 1950s and 1960s. Cocaine, THC, heroin, and LSD were used in some of Gottlieb's most notable studies. Gottlieb used the pretext that it would aid in discovering truth serum as a ploy to justify continuing his projects. Nevertheless, despite all of his efforts, LSD and other substances made interrogations more difficult rather than easier. The main reason why Gottlieb's work on Project MKUltra is disliked is that the scientist conducted experiments on both aware and unaware Americans.
