Psalm 59 is a "miktam", which means in Hebrew to engrave. David wants to engrave the truths expressed in this Psalm in his heart and thinking not to take matters in his own hands when King Saul had sent men to watch his house in order to take his life. David describes these wicked men as "snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city" (Psalm 59:6, Psalm 59:14) This is despite the fact that David had done nothing wrong to deserve death: "I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me." (Psalm 59:4) Notice that because David was innocent, he pleads to the Lord boldly: "Arise to help me; look on my plight!" He continues: "You are my strength, I watch for you; you God, are my fortress, my God on whom I can rely." (Psalm 59:9-10) This reflects an important principle that when we ask the Lord God for help, we must come with clean hands. David desires that his enemies would be humbled and brought to shame by the Lord (Psalm 59:12-13) But even before that day of deliverance comes, David is determined on praising and relying on God as his fortress (Psalm 59:17) Ray Crocker is the Senior Pastor at Heritage Baptist Church Singapore.
