Two wooden planks covered with reindeer skin: even today, Mongolian nomads perpetuate the customs of their ancestors, who were among the first to put on skis, over 10,000 years ago. Skiing is not a recent invention - man has always needed to get around on snow to hunt - but its development dates back to the first crossing of Greenland by the Norwegian Nansen, in 1888. Following in the footsteps of this extreme adventurer, French alpine hunters popularized these strange skates attached to the foot. Whether a useful or futile ski, the intoxicating pleasure of gliding and speed became fashionable. Women turned it into a vector of emancipation, notably by wearing pants, which were more suited to the sport. Later, at the 1936 Olympic Games, the Nazis exploited the victories of their athletes, turning skis into essential war equipment. During the “Trente Glorieuses”, snow vacations became a mass leisure activity, changing the face of the mountains and their inhabitants... Since the beginning of the 20th century, skiing has been synonymous with new territories to conquer, whether natural, technical or commercial. Resorts such as Avoriaz, which have sprung up ex nihilo in the high mountains, and the rise of free-style skiing suggest that the present is here to stay. Yet global warming is melting the snow and threatening its future... Peppered with archive footage and surprising anecdotes, this documentary gives the floor to sports historians, journalists and champions, while also evoking the evolution of our society towards “all-round leisure” and the frantic search for thrills.
