In this student E-Lecture: "Near surface geophysics for engineering: Information vs risk", geophysical techniques are just a part of the full toolbox available for ground investigation in engineering and construction projects. Using geophysics at the right time in the right way requires an understanding of the information each instrument produces, and how this relates to what is produced by other options, for example digging or drilling holes. The requirements of a geotechnical or geoenvironmental ground investigation are best stated as a requirement to reduce risk of unforeseen ground conditions to an acceptable level. What an acceptable level is depends on the site, the project, and the client’s informed attitude to risk. As a result of some ground investigation effort (and cost) what do you know, and what do you still not know? The talk will explore these concepts, and use case examples to demonstrate where geophysical techniques are most useful.
