Snowfall, low winds, and temperatures near freezing, not frigid, were perfect conditions for a winter day hike. This was not a high-risk hike, just an opportunity to get out in snowy conditions, not 30 minutes from my car. It's now January, and I'm starting to think about spring backpacking. The impetus for the hike was a desire to make tea from sweet fern I foraged while backpacking the Appalachian Trail in Connecticut in October. I could have made it in the comfort of my own home, but I wanted or needed a reason to get out there. I have been waiting for a snowy, low-risk day to do this. I took my Sea to Summit Escapist Tarp to shelter me from the snow. The effort to set up the tarp was made more difficult by the frozen ground and snow cover. I was unable to easily use tent stakes or find rocks to tie down and secure the tarp. The tarp also has a limit to the length of the cordage. If you are relying on trees, they must be spaced conveniently to fit the dimensions of the tarp. Nature does not plan ahead for our technical needs. While the tarp was a necessity, my handy Thermarest Z-Seat is a tried-and-true friend. While mostly off camera, it was my countertop for ingredients and utensils. It became my seat when I moved to the ground. Escapist Tarp - https://seatosummit.com/products/esca...
