While silicon offers a theoretical energy capacity ten times higher than traditional graphite, its adoption has been stalled by a 300% volume expansion during charging, which typically leads to mechanical failure and internal "explosions" in rigid solid-state environments. The research team solved this by using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) to grow silicon in a forest-like columnar structure, creating intentional internal voids that act as "breathing valves" to absorb expansion without crushing the surrounding solid electrolyte. This architecture not only prevents structural degradation but also enables remarkable physical durability; prototypes demonstrated the ability to maintain power output even when bent or cut with scissors.
