Kate Spade’s Devotion To Her Daughter Trumped Fashion, Designer Took Off A Decade To Raise Frances Kate Spade was one of the most important names in fashion when she made an unorthodox decision: she would disappear completely from the scene to focus on raising her daughter. The sudden death of this 55-year-old week has highlighted her family and the measures Spade took to care for her daughter. As Moneyish reported in a Spade profile in 2016, she and her husband took almost a decade to raise their daughter, Frances Beatrix Spade. He even parted company with the incredibly lucrative brand Kate Spade to do so. Spade said it was the right decision, even when he was losing his "name" in the fashion industry. The designer told Moneyish that she would not change the time she had with her daughter "in a million years." Although the decision would have cost Kate Spade a fortune, since she and her husband sold the namesake brand at a time when it was in full swing, she was proud of her role as a mother. "I've been a class mom," Spade proudly told the Wall Street Journal in 2016. During her time outside the fashion industry, Kate Spade went from having a name in the most popular handbags to being the mother who focuses on raising her daughter. As Moneyish noted, Kate stopped thinking about fashion completely. "Most of the time, just think of Kate Spade when her 12-year-old daughter asks why there are shoes with her mother's name on them," the report said. When her daughter was 11 years old, Kate Spade returned to the fashion industry with Frances Valentine, who sold accessories made in Italy. The Wall Street Journal noted that the line is "more sophisticated and more expensive" than Kate's previous efforts, and earned praise for her work with the line. But even on his return, Kate Spade's priorities remained her husband and her daughter. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Kate said she started every day with a special meal for the daughter whom she affectionately calls Bea. "Smoothies," he said when asked about his favorite breakfast. "I do kale, all that nonsense, I have the NutriBullet, first I make [my daughter] not to try all the greens, I do it with bananas, strawberries, I throw yogurt for the protein." Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Spade leaves behind her husband of 24 years, Andy, and a daughter, Frances Beatrix Spade. https://t.co/LgQjYQCVIV NBCWashington (@nbcwashington) June 5, 2018 Kate Spade's family had not yet issued a statement in the wake of her sudden death on Tuesday. The reports indicated that the 55-year-old designer took his own life.
