Here's a wonderful concept that I got from Mick Goodrick's guitar bible "The Advancing Guitarist": It's a great exercise, utilizing relative pitch to navigate between random chords, always trying to find the shortest way. Using only chord tones in the beginning, you'll find that the biggest distance when connecting two chords is a whole tone up or down (mostly it will be a semitone, or the note can even stay the same). Training the perception and identification of chord tones first, you can then move on to other chord scale tones (not shown here), ultimately being able to freely play over the weirdest combinations and types of chords while being able to recognize them correctly (and getting faster at that skill). The four levels I'm demonstrating are meant to be a rough guideline, in reality the process might be a little more complex depending on your harmonic and improvisational knowledge.
