During the arraignment, a criminal defendant has the option to plead not guilty, guilty, or no contest (also called by its Latin translation "nolo contendre"). On the surface, a guilty plea and a no contest plea are very similar. A defendant who pleads guilty or no contest is waiving their right to a trial, and the judge will impose the same jail sentence either way. The main difference between a guilty plea and a no contest plea, is that the defendant is not admitting guilt when they plead no contest. Whereas a guilty plea is an admission of guilt. Not admitting guilt in a criminal trial might be advantageous because it sounds better on a criminal record and during job interviews. A no contest plea also has legal ramifications in a civil trial based on the criminal case. For instance, if the criminal case could lead to a lawsuit, such as from an assault or battery charge, then the no contest plea cannot be used against you in the civil trial. However if the defendant were to plead guilty to assault or battery during their arraignment, then that guilty plea could be used against them in a civil case, resulting in a possible money judgement against them.
