WHAT IS AN ADJOURNMENT IN A CRIMINAL CASE? George and Andy explain what an adjournment is and what it can mean for a criminal case. GEORGE: An adjournment is basically another court date. It’s moving the case to a new court date for some reason, and there's a lot of different reasons that we could get an adjournment. Maybe it’s to get discovery. Maybe it’s an opportunity for our client, who may be struggling with drug or alcohol addiction or mental illness, to get into some treatment. Discovery is an important one because then it gives us an opportunity during that adjourned time to take a look at what the evidence is in the case and to help us decide which direction we want to go in the case, whether it’s a case we want to litigate or whether it’s a case we want to, you know, try to resolve by way of a plea bargain.
