Gerdaniye Saz Semai is a form of Turkish classical music that originated in the Ottoman Empire. It is a type of instrumental music typically played on a saz, a long-necked stringed instrument that is plucked. This one is composed by Suphi Ezgi. Suphi Ezgi was a Turkish military physician who specialized in neurology, as well as a musician, musicologist, and composer. He was born in Istanbul in 1869 and died in the same city in 1962. Ezgi is best known for his studies of Turkish classical music and is considered one of the first theorists to attempt to place the tonal system of Turkish music on a scientific foundation. His father, Ismail Zühdü Bey, who was a clerk responsible for document authentication in the Post and Telegraph Ministry, had a significant influence on his son's interest in music. In addition to his contributions to the study of Turkish classical music, Ezgi was also a prolific composer, having composed numerous pieces in various genres, including classical and folk music.
