Mittelbau Dora concentration camp. A tour. Part one of two.

On 28 August 1943, the SS set up a subcamp of the Buchenwald concentration camp at the foot of the Kohnstein north of Nordhausen which they called "Arbeitslager Dora". The first prisoners were brought from Buchenwald on that day. They were employed in further excavation of the already existing tunnels and in the manufacture of the V weapons, the V1 and V2 as well as the Storch aircraft. On 28 October 1944, the Dora camp, which had previously been run as a sub camp of Buchenwald, became an independent concentration camp. The SS Economic and Administrative Main Office (SS-WVHA) gave it the name Mittelbau. It grew to include almost 40 subcamps. During the 18 months that the Mittelbau concentration camp complex existed, around 60,000 prisoners from 48 nations passed through it; 20,000 of them perished as a result of the inhumane conditions.
