Writer, journalist, filmmaker, Khwaja Ahmad Abbas was above all, a communicator of ideas. As a student at Aligarh Muslim University, Abbas and his friends are riding in the train with Nehru asking him how to bring Inquilab. Few years later Nehru visits Aligarh and enthrals young students with his stirring speech. Today, when Nehru’s legacy is being framed on social media in an adverse light, we excavate some memories of Abbas’s meetings with Nehru, as described in Abbas’s autobiography. The incidents shed light on the passion and keen eye of Abbas, the journalist, while illuminating some lesser known and scarcely remembered facets of the personality of the first Prime Minister of India. On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Pandit Nehru, the Khwaja Ahmed Abbas Memorial Trust in association with Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, presents a series of podcasts on these meetings between Abbas and Nehru, in an effort to delve into a more personal remembrance of Jawaharlal Nehru. At the end of each episode, we present a poem selected from Amar Jyot, a compendium of poems that pay tribute to Nehru on his death in 1974. The episode is narrated by writer, director, playwright, actor and academician, Dr. Danish Iqbal, an award-winning filmmaker and an alumnus of the National School of Drama. He has directed several plays and has acted in major productions like The Antigone Project, Karna Warrior of the Sun, Andhayug, Aurangzeb, Othello, Gautam Buddha. He is presently working as Assistant Professor and Course Coordinator in Acting in AJKMCRC, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Ali Sardar Jafri’s poem ‘Sandul o Gulab ki Raakh’ has been read by poet and activist, Gauhar Raza, former Chief Scientist Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
