How to roll a plying ball for chain plying, using your Lendrum flyer arm as a third “hand”. This isn’t my technique, I didn’t invent it, I have no idea who did. But I learned it from women in my spinning group who were generous with their time to get me up to speed. To get setup: Put your bobbin full of spun singles on your flyer head – I put it on, so the fiber is coming off the underside of the bobbin. I recommend using aged singles instead of super fresh ones, to keep the single a bit more manageable. Put the tension/brake band on the bobbin and adjust so it spins smoothly but not super freely. Reasons to use a plying ball instead of chain plying on the fly: 1. Chain plying requires a lot of coordination, between the chaining and the treadling and managing an even ply. Doing the chaining first allows you to pay attention to the treadling and the amount of twist you are getting into your plying, giving a better result with less stress (for me). 2. Its easier for me to manage color changes when I am not managing the chaining and the plying at the same time. 3. Its easier for me to manage breaks or other weirdness that crops up and gives me a full view of the singles before I ply them. 4. Plying from a plying ball is the bomb and I’ve had great results with it in general.
