Mendelssohn – Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Op. 56 “Scottish Symphony”** One of Mendelssohn’s most atmospheric and poetic works, this symphony beautifully captures his lyricism, romantic color, and vivid landscape painting. It is a representative programmatic (scenic) symphony inspired by his travels. 🎼 Overview Composer: Felix Mendelssohn (1809–1847) Title: Symphony No. 3 “Scottish” Key: A minor Composed: Inspired by his 1829 trip to Scotland → completed in 1842 (about 13 years) Premiere: Leipzig Gewandhaus 🌿 Background During his trip to Scotland at the age of nineteen, Mendelssohn visited the ruins of Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, where he was deeply moved by the lonely and mysterious atmosphere. He wrote in a letter: “Here I found the beginning of my Scottish Symphony.” Rather than a purely formal symphony, 👉 this work paints nature, history, misty landscapes, castles, and legends through music. 🎵 Characteristics ① Four movements connected without pause (Attacca) All movements are played continuously → creating one long, flowing narrative ② Dark and mysterious colors minor tonality foggy, shadowy harmonies a sense of northern solitude and romantic melancholy ③ Folk-like rhythms Scottish dance rhythms and folk-inspired melodies appear throughout the piece 🎶 Movements ① Andante con moto – Allegro un poco agitato slow, somber introduction followed by restless and passionate themes dramatic, storm-like development 👉 “Misty castles and desolate landscapes” ② Vivace non troppo scherzo-like movement light, quick rhythms resembles a lively Scottish folk dance 👉 “Fairies dancing in the fields” ③ Adagio deeply lyrical and expressive warm, song-like melodies Mendelssohn’s signature tenderness at its finest 👉 “A prayer in solitude” ④ Allegro vivacissimo – Allegro maestoso assai fierce and energetic finale heroic drive and intensity finally turns to A major with a majestic ending 👉 “From darkness to light”
