On December 14, 2025, editorial cartoonists Kate Salley Palmer, Alexandra Bowman and Angelo Lopez had a talk about Kate and Alex's career, their experiences as women cartoonists, and their thoughts on Donald Trump's second term. BIOGRAPHY Kate Salley Palmer was born and grew up in Orangeburg, SC. She received a BA from the University of South Carolina in Elementary Education. She started doing political cartoons for The Greenville News in 1975. In 1980, the Field Newspaper Syndicate began distributing Kate's cartoons nationwide. In 1981, she received the Freedoms Foundation's principal award, the George Washington medal, for editorial cartooning. Throughout the ‘90s, Kate illustrated more than 20 picture books for various publishers. In 1989, Kate illustrated “How Many Feet in the Bed?” She wrote and illustrated “A Gracious Plenty” for Simon & Schuster. She has produced 9 titles for Warbranch Press, Inc. a publishing company she and her husband started in 1999: a reissue of “A Gracious Plenty,” (her second book for Simon & Schuster); “The Pink House;” “The Little Chairs;” “Palmetto: Symbol of Courage;” “Francis Marion and the Legend of the Swamp Fox” (which was illustrated by Jim & Kate’s son, James.); “Almost Invisible: Black Patriots of the American Revolution;” First South Carolinians“ (also illustrated by son James), “I Know Santa Very Well;” “Hostie,” and “2016 Race for the White House—a Grownup Coloring Book.” In 2006, The Clemson University Digital Press published her memoir/cartoon retrospective, “Growing Up Cartoonist in the Baby Boom South.” In 2022, Kate joined the Blue Ridge Arts Center in Seneca. Since then, she has produced more than 200 oil paintings. Her paintings hang in various art shows in the area, and in homes from Charleston to San Francisco. Kate's art and books can be found in Warbranch Press, Inc. https://warbranchpress.com/index.html Alexandra Bowman is a political cartoonist, journalist, and satirist based in New York City and currently creating political cartoons for the newsletter Counterpoint. She served as the political cartoonist for the political action committee The Lincoln Project during the 2020 election, and later served as the political cartoonist for the John Kerry and John Kasich-founded environmental organization World War Zero. After being selected as the 2019 National Winner in Political Cartooning in the Society of Professional Journalists' Mark of Excellence Awards, and serving as the "Satire Correspondent" on Kevin Kallaugher's webcast "Satire Can Save Us All," Alex was the inaugural winner of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists' (AAEC) 2024 Locher Fellowship for excellence in editorial cartooning from a young voice. Through the Locher Fellowship, Alexandra was a Special Guest and speaker at Cartoon Crossroads Columbus. She is also a Director of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists in 2025. Much of Alex's political illustration work focuses on the cultural norms and attitudes that inform ideas and political identities. As a young person coming into political consciousness in a polarized time, Alex is interested in how we got here and what cultural and mental factors perpetuate beliefs. She is honored to get to be in this discussion with Kal, one of her heroes and mentors in the field. He work currently appears in The Cartoon Movement and Pitik Bulag. Angelo won the 2016 Robert F. Kennedy Book and Journalism Award for Editorial Cartoons. He has also won the 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2018 Sigma Delta Chi award for editorial cartooning for newspapers with a circulation under 100,000.
