I've been wanting to slowly get into the fascinating musical landscape of the Philippines, and so this is a first step into that by staying into the linguistic comfort of Romance languages. Indeed, the Philippines were long under the colonial domination of of Spain, and Spanish language art, music and poetry abound in the country's history. Allegedly a song by Juan Cuadrado, the story goes that it was written by the Spaniard as he stayed in the city even after Spanish troops left the country at the end of the colonial domination. There are different versions of the song, some with lyrics even pleading for the lover to not go to Zamboanga instead of not leaving it, but I chose to go with this version. Filipino music is defined by profound influence from Spanish culture, perhaps moreso than in many areas of Latin America. The piano and classical guitar represent this in this piece, as well as the usage of the mandolin, inherited from Spanish folk. The primary texture of Filipino music is found in the rondalla, the prototypical ensemble of plucked stringed instruments with a bright, shimmering, plucky quality. Filipino songs are often defined by light, simple rhythms derived from forms like habanera, jota, etc, and very often remain in major tonality, with simple, light melodies.
