Posy Simmonds is the most important British female caricaturist and il-lustrator: She has been drawing comic strips and cartoons for the liberal left-wing newspaper The Guardian for more than 50 years, created Brit-ain’s first graphic novel and has written classic children’s books. Her work and scathing social criticism stem from her multi-layered commitment to women’s rights. Some of her graphic novels are cleverly interwoven with literary models – and have had feature films based on them. In Posy Simmonds: Close Up, Cartoonmuseum Basel presents the most comprehensive retrospective on this comics pioneer to date, with her originals on display for the first time ever in the German-speaking world. The exhibition includes original drawings from all graphic novels, plus cartoons and illustrations for magazines and newspapers, drawings from her children’s books, and unpublished preliminary work.
