In 1587, 117 people landed on an island off the coast of North Carolina. Three years later, they had completely vanished. No bodies. No signs of struggle. Just one word carved into a tree: Croatoan. This wasn't the first attempt to colonize the New World. The English had tried twice before at Roanoke. Both failed. But this time was different. This group included women and children. Their leader, John White, left his own daughter and newborn granddaughter behind when he sailed back to England for supplies. Due to war with Spain, White couldn't return for three years. When he finally made it back in 1590, he found... nothing. The houses were dismantled. The fort was gone. All 117 people had disappeared. But here's the strangest part: there were no skeletons. No graves. No signs of violence. It was like they'd just packed up and left. The only clue? That single word carved into a fence post: Croatoan. And nearby, the letters C-R-O were carved into a tree. White knew what this meant. The colonists had agreed on a signal—if they left in distress, they'd carve a Maltese cross. There was no cross. Just Croatoan. So what happened? Four main theories exist. First: they integrated with the Croatoan tribe on nearby Hatteras Island. The name carved was no coincidence. Archaeological evidence found there includes English artifacts from that exact period. Second: the Spanish attacked them. Spain and England were at war, and Spanish forces were known to be in the area. But again, no bodies, no signs of battle. Third: starvation and disease forced them to move inland, where they may have been killed by hostile tribes. But no mass graves have ever been found. And fourth: they tried to sail back to England in a small boat and were lost at sea. But no wreckage was ever discovered. Four centuries later, archaeologists are still searching. Recent discoveries on Hatteras Island suggest the integration theory might be correct—a signet ring belonging to one of the colonists was found there. But without definitive proof, the mystery remains. Over 100 people vanished from the face of the Earth, leaving behind just one word. And that's exactly why we still talk about it today.
