Subscribe to win a new dorodango that I make. I’ll be mailing it to a random subscriber in 7 days. Step-by-step process below: Oh btw, here’s where I learned everything I know about the art of dorodango (such a nicely made, cosy book too): https://amzn.to/4lN2mPH Dorodango is a traditional Japanese art where you take ordinary soil and polish it into a mirror-like ball. It takes a lot of patience (and a lot of dirt falling apart in your hands), but the end result is strangely rewarding. Here's how I made it. How to Make a Dorodango (Step by Step) 1. Grab some dirt. Regular soil or works. Clay works too if you mix it about 50:50 with sand. 2. Add a little water and mix until it sticks together. You’re aiming for damp clay, not mud soup. 3. Pack it into a rough ball with your hands. Don’t worry if it’s lumpy at first. 4. Start shaping it by patting and rolling in your palms. Keep compressing it so it holds together. 5. Sprinkle dry dirt over the outside and rub it in. This helps the surface firm up. 6. Keep repeating: roll the ball, add dry dirt, smooth it out. The outer layer should get harder. Do this 10-20 times. 7. Let it rest and dry a bit (placing it in a bag helps spread the moisture), then polish by gently rubbing with a small glass jar or cup. 8. To make it super shiny, you can’t just add the same dirt. You need pure clay. To separate clay from soil, mix with water and use an electric mixer or paint mixer to mix it. It should be about milkshake consistency. If you don’t have an electric mixer you can put it in a sealed jar and shake it. 9. Leave for a few hours for the layers to separate. The clay will sit on top of the sand. 10. Place clay on baking sheet in oven at a low heat for an hour or two until dry. 11. Use pestle and mortar or coffee grinder to break it down. You can filter it after for better results. 12. If using clay, don’t use the clay-sand mixture, just use the clay. 13. The process of the same for the last 10-20 layers, just with the fine clay this time. 14. After this polish with a microfiber cloth for a few hours. 15. You can use a tiny drop of olive oil on rim of glass at end to make it extra shiny (don’t use more than a drop or it actually makes it really dull, I learned that the hard way). Have fun!
