British Meal Times - Business English Success

British meal times can be confusing for foreign visitors. The main source of confusion is in the naming of the meals Some will say breakfast dinner and tea. Others will say breakfast lunch and dinner. It's actually a class divide thing. Before explaining that, here are the meal times that are the same for everyone Breakfast - first meal of the day - literally, to break your fast Elevenses - coffee break in the morning at 11 ish Afternoon tea - traditional tea and cake around 3-4 in the afternoon Supper - a snack before bedtime Brunch - substantial late breakfast, usually on the weekends, between breakfast and lunch - hence the name. Rich, upper-class people will say breakfast lunch and dinner. Poor, lower-class people will say breakfast dinner and tea. The problem arises if you're invited to dinner. Do they mean the midday meal, or the evening meal? To a lesser extend the same applies when invited to tea.
