This year’s icebreaking season on the Vistula River was one of the toughest in many years. ❄️ Prolonged freezing temperatures created nearly 200 km of continuous ice cover – from the river’s mouth to the Toruń area. Such extensive ice formation, occurring only once every few years, required fast decision making and intense efforts from the teams responsible for winter flood protection. The winter of 2025/2026 showed how quickly a calm river can turn into a powerful, unpredictable force. ⚠️ That’s why Polish icebreakers and well trained crews play such a crucial role in preventing ice jams and flood risks.
