Two marches played on a beautiful set of Lowland pipes made by Ray Sloan. The first tune has many names. It's known as "Highland Lassie Going to the Fair," "Allison Cross," "The Laird of Lude," "John Doherty's March" and "Bó Mhín Na Toitean" or "March Of The Meeatoiteen Bull." Cillian Vallely of Lunasa calls it "The Bull's March." Lunasa performed on the island here last Saturday evening, and Cillian Vallely played this tune on the Uilleann pipes. The concert was unforgettable and a huge inspiration. This Scottish tune made a very comfortable home in Ulster. The second march was composed by William Denholm, Pipe Major of The Royal Scots after WWII. He called it "The Royal Scots Polka" but it has become known as "The Royal Scots" in Cape Breton. It's been a favorite since I heard it on an Edinburgh Police Pipe Band LP sometime in the '70's.
