Sally Ozonoff, Ph.D. talks about Advances in Early Detection of ASD Part of the 2018-2019 Distinguished Lecturer Series The UC Davis MIND Institute is working to amplify the voices of the disability community and promote neurodiversity. This includes responding to concerns regarding the language and framing used to describe autism and other neurodevelopmental disabilities. We believe there is a benefit to maintaining access to historical presentations like those on our YouTube page, but recognize that the vocabulary used doesn’t always match the current preferred language. We appreciate the harmful impact of this outdated language, the discriminatory framework which fostered it, and the distress it may cause to some individuals. In an attempt to lessen this, we have changed the titles of presentations where appropriate. 0:00 Introduction 0:16 Advances in Early Detection of Autism Spectrum Disorder 0:35 Earlier Identification of ASD 2:28 Methods to Study Early Symptoms 5:18 UC Davis Infant Sibling Study 7:24 Measures 12:41 Prospective Methods for Studying Onset 14:55 Declining Trajectories of Gaze to Eyes coded from a videotaped interaction with an examiner 17:12 Declining Rates of Social Engagement 19:39 Declining Trajectories in the Majority of Participants Latent Class Analyses 24:32 Declining Trajectories: Eye Tracking 24:55 What Prospective Studies Reveal about Onset 27:25 Recurrence Risk 32:20 Psychiatric & Neurodevelopmental Disorders in 1 Degree Relatives 33:16 Clinical Outcomes at 36 Months 34:27 Clinical Outcomes at 9-14 Years 36:58 Differences Persist and Emerge 37:29 AAP Practice Recommendations (2007) 38:36 Red Flags for Autism in Infancy 39:23 Screening Tools 40:27 Video-Based Screening 42:10 Video Referenced Infant Rating System for Autism (VIRSA) 45:26 VIRSA Ratings: Parent 46:35 VIRSA Ratings: Examiner 46:57 Conclusions 48:18 Future Directions: Automated Gaze Detection 51:03 Resources
