A Day in Setagaya: Sumo and Lucky Cats

The plan was to view the sakura along the Meguro River and have lunch at Shinanoya, known for their chicken. After being told the sakura are not in bloom, we decided to visit a district known for the many maneki neko (lucky cats). Setagaya, is a city about 35 minutes by train from Gotanda. Getting there, take the Yamanote Line from Gotanda Station to Shinjuku Station and transfer to the Odakyu Line to Gotokuji Station. From Gotokuji Station we walked to Setagaya Hachimangu Shrine. It holds sumo matches to celebrate the Fall Festival in mid Semptember. Just behind the Shrine is Mahorodou Sougetsu, a small intimate confectionery shop, where one can enjoy the friendly atmosphere with tea and a Japanese treat. A five minute walk to Gotokuji Temple reveals the famous white beckoning cat known as the maneki neko. The story is that of a cat who protected a samurai lord caught in a rainstorm, by providing shelter. With appreciation the samurai funded the temple’s restoration and hence the hundreds of lucky cats. Returning to Gotanda, we wanted to try the popular chicken from Shinanoya. However, another failed desire. Through other media, I heard OMO5 Tokyo Gotanda by Hoshino Resorts offered chicken from Shinanoya, so we headed there. The chicken is juicy and well seasoned.
