In today’s insightful Homily, Father John Chen explores the profound connection between divine wisdom and pastoral compassion. Reflecting on Solomon’s humble request for an "understanding heart," Father Chen reminds us that true leadership and holiness begin with the desire to distinguish right from wrong. We are invited to rest with Jesus in a "deserted place," allowing the Good Shepherd to nourish our souls with His teaching and His presence. This Mass encourages us to "see what must be done" and find the strength to act with a heart aligned with God’s heavenly care. The Scriptures highlight the gift of a discerning heart and the tireless love of Christ: -The First Reading (1 Kings 3:4-13): At Gibeon, the Lord appears to the young King Solomon in a dream, offering him any gift he desires. Solomon asks not for long life or riches, but for an "understanding heart to judge your people". Pleased by this request, God grants him a heart "wise and understanding" beyond any who came before or will come after him. -The Responsorial Psalm (Ps 119): A prayer for spiritual guidance: "Lord, teach me your statutes". -The Holy Gospel (Mark 6:30-34): The Apostles return from their mission and report all they have done. Jesus invites them to "come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while". However, when He sees the vast crowd waiting for Him, His heart is moved with pity, for they were "like sheep without a shepherd," and He begins to teach them at length. Let us pray that these Sacred Mysteries may restore us to holiness and obtain for us the pardon we seek from our merciful God.
