Car break-ins continue across Austin, and the police force downtown is short by dozens of officers. KXAN investigates what’s behind both public safety concerns. In this KXAN news compilation, we begin at Mount Bonnell, Zilker Park, and the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail—popular Austin outdoor spots now plagued by car burglaries. According to Austin Police, the same repeat offenders are arrested and released repeatedly, with little lasting consequence due to gaps in prosecution and sentencing laws. Then we examine the ongoing staffing shortage at the Austin Police Department. With only 75 of 104 authorized officers assigned downtown—and 14 of those on leave—APD is reallocating resources from specialized units to bolster 911 response and patrol.
