A talk about Austrian writer Thomas Bernhard's novel "The Loser" (aka "his Glenn Gould novel"). I call attention to the way in which Wertheimer's failure to achieve his goal of becoming the greatest piano virtuoso of his time (a distinction belonging to Glenn Gould) is redeemed by Bernhard's success in becoming J. S. Bach by creating a novel that creatively imitates Bach's fugal compositions. I also talk about the way that the anti-Austrian invective that runs throughout the novel turns the tables on the anti-Semitic diatribes that one finds in Adolph Hitler's "Mein Kampf." The pdf of "Three-Part Inventions," the book that I wrote on Bernhard's major novels, is available free for the asking on my academia.edu page.
