South America’s lengthy shoreline draws some of the world’s most dedicated surfers and the former fishing village of Punta del Diablo has some of the continent’s most uninterrupted swell, where just about all there is to do is focus on the waves. From December through February, the population of Punta del Diablo in Uruguay swells from less than 1,000 to somewhere around 30,000 when people from Argentina and Brazil come to hit the famous beaches. That’s also one of the main reasons why we were attracted to go there as well as the architecture that is still peppered with basic houses painted in a kaleidoscope of colors, and the sandy dirt roads that criss-cross. The weather is almost invariably cooperative and cloudy skies are rare.
