The Battle of Hlobane was one of the most disastrous moments of the Anglo-Zulu War — a desperate retreat down the treacherous slopes of a mountain that turned a bold British raid into a nightmare of blood, chaos, and astonishing bravery. On March 28th, 1879, British and colonial forces stormed Hlobane in hopes of crippling Zulu resistance. Instead, they walked straight into the jaws of a vastly larger Zulu army. Trapped on narrow rock paths while 20,000 Zulu warriors closed in, the British were forced into a deadly flight through “Devil’s Pass,” where horses slipped, soldiers fell to their deaths, and small units were annihilated to the last man. Yet, even in the middle of disaster, acts of courage emerged. Redvers Buller repeatedly rode back into the chaos to rescue stranded men, earning the Victoria Cross. Boer commander Piet Uys died trying to save his son, who refused to abandon him. Entire units such as the Border Horse were wiped out, their final stand remembered in bitter legend. The next day, at nearby Kambula, the same Zulu army would charge fortified British positions — and be shattered. Hlobane became both tragedy and turning point: a lesson in overconfidence, miscalculation, and the brutal price of war. This is the story of the Cliffside Massacre — a tale of courage, catastrophe, and a mountain that devoured an army.
