Report launch – Nuclear deterrence and stability in South Asia: perceptions and realities

At this webinar launch, principal author Antoine Levesques along with co-authors Desmond Bowen and John H. Gill discussed the findings of their new IISS report on nuclear deterrence and stability in South Asia. This report presents extensive, data-rich evidence suggesting that there are grave deficiencies and asymmetries in India’s and Pakistan’s nuclear doctrines, which are compounded by mutual disbelief, existing and emerging military capabilities, and the prolonged absence of related dialogue mechanisms. Based on that analysis, neither India nor Pakistan can be complacent. They can choose to creatively overcome the challenges to adopting new risk reduction measures. The report also identifies a list of potentially useful steps that could help improve this unstable situation.
