Before we begin the drive, we briefly attempt to explain the origins of the naming of Black Horse Pike. In this drive along New Jersey’s Black Horse Pike, we begin at the junction of Route 322 and Route 42 in Williamstown and head north toward the North–South Freeway / Atlantic City Expressway. This stretch of roadway is frequently congested, and traffic backups are a daily reality for commuters. Along the way, I discuss the upcoming construction project on Route 42 and whether it is likely to make a meaningful difference. Similar projects have recently been completed on Route 70, Route 18, and Route 9 in Toms River, focusing on drainage improvements, ADA curb ramps, and other safety upgrades — but not on increasing capacity or reducing congestion. This drive explores an important question: Will Route 42 construction actually improve traffic flow, or will congestion remain the same? • Black Horse Pike (NJ Route 322) • Route 42 corridor • Atlantic City Expressway connection • Route 42 traffic congestion • NJDOT road construction projects • Safety upgrades vs. congestion relief • South Jersey commuting and infrastructure 0:33 NJ 42 0:35 Williamstown, NJ 5:07 state reconstructing Route 42
