Dazaifu Tenmangu is a prominent Shinto shrine located in Dazaifu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. It's dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, a scholar, poet, and politician from the Heian period (794-1185) who is revered as the deity of learning, scholarship, and academics. The shrine was established in 919 AD, shortly after Michizane's death, as a way to honor his memory and seek his blessings for academic success. It's one of the most significant Tenmangu shrines in Japan, attracting students and scholars who pray for success in their studies or academic pursuits. Michizane is believed to have a strong connection to the shrine. It's said that after his death, several calamities struck Kyoto, which ceased only after he was enshrined as a deity at Dazaifu. The shrine's buildings reflect traditional Japanese architecture, with beautiful vermillion-lacquered structures, torii gates, and serene gardens. People engage in rituals like washing hands and mouth at the temizuya (water pavilion) before approaching the main shrine, and offering prayers and donations. Visitors often take part in traditions like omikuji (fortune-telling paper strips) and ema (wooden plaques for writing wishes).
