Did Call of Duty Change Gaming Forever? (First Playthrough in 20 years)

It's been 20 years since I last played Call of Duty 4 on Xbox 360. This game broke my brain and was one of the games I remember the most fondly from the era of the 360 that I went the hardest on. It was before Micro Transactions. It was before Cosmetics. It was before all the name plates. Call of Duty 4 represented the purest demonstration of a whole host of modern cinematic games coming out. In a lot of ways it was one of the first truly cinematic games attempting to bridge video games and film making, and in my memory it absolutely did! The online experience is where the game found it's longest legs though. Hundreds of nights were spent playing this game over and and over online, and somehow this game in my experience reached a peak that was higher than Counter Strike and Halo which had been the only games previously to snag me. What was it about this game that hit so hard? What made it fresh? What did it do differently? What did it do worse, or better? After a few more releases in the franchise I was definitely "over" it, and I moved on. Even looked at the franchise with a little disdain for some reason. But at the time, this was pure innovation and execution. With fresh Eyes, I would like to revisit this game on the Xbox 360 and see if I can understand it a little better.
