These "weeds" have taken over, but here's what you can do about it

We've had a VERY wet winter here in Southern California, and all of the plants have been LOVING it, including weeds. Let's talk a little bit about "weeds" and what they mean for us gardeners. 0:46 Intro I'm here in the side yard which is not an area that we tend to as much as the other part of the yard. In fact, most of what you see here wasn't planted intentionally. There are TONS of things growing over here, and they're all awesome varieties that have made their way to this part of the property one way or another. I haven't maintained this part area much at all lately. Part of that is that I've been busy, and part is that I kinda just let it go. It's hard to get mad at such pretty plants! However, I do need to manage all of this now before I get really busy and all of these plants start to look rough or go to flower and drop a whole new batch of seeds in this spot! So what really is a "weed"? Let's work with the definition that it's a plant that's in the way. Yes, dandelions are almost always called a weed even though they have great uses. All of this borage, alyssum, lettuce, nasturtium, and so on are "weeds" for me right now even though they're edible, pretty, and useful. So here's how I think about it: Is there overcrowding? Are plants competing or even just in the way? Even if I have two squash plants growing next to each other, I may not have ideal spacing, so I would have to thin one of them. If you let some of these grow, they might take over within a season or two. Some plants - like nasturtium, four o'clock, or borage - can be really vigorous growers and take over other plants. On a related note, think about airflow and sunlight access for the plants that you want to grow. Moving into the garden area, I still have lots of "weeds" present. The most prominent is a patch of sweet pea plants that have come up from seed production in years past. Even though it's a beautiful plant, I need to get rid of it because I'm bringing tomatoes into this same spot. I also want to work the soil a little bit in the meantime! In another part of the property, we have a corner that's been neglected. In just a couple of months, tons of grasses and flowers have popped up and are a couple of feet tall now! So what I'll do here is weed-whack it down. Although that doesn't get to the roots, I'll layer a thick load of mulch on top of that to suffocate most of the plants. That way, I have both carbon & nitrogen added to the soil! 10:46 Composting Weeds I always try to keep as much organic matter as possible on my property. We're always building the soil health & adding to it. However, you usually don't want to compost weeds that have lots of seeds. Granted, seeds can be killed if your compost gets above 140 degrees, but that's not something that everyone is doing. If you aren't measuring, it's better to play it safe. I've shown you a ton of "weeds" that have grown and are out of control. Ideally, you want to pull the plants then they're at the "thread" stage. That's when it's easiest to pull them and also before the plants have pulled from the soil. With that in mind, stay on top of things much better than I have!
