Series 4 : EP5 : Cachalot, Duskies, Rail - Christchurch to Picton via Kaikōura

Where are we off to in this video? We change modes of transport to rail and catch the Coastal Pacific train from Christchurch up the coast to Kaikōura. It's a leisurely and scenic three hour trip so we have some whal watching booked for the afternoon. One of the attractions of Kaikōura is that you can see Sperm Whales quite close to the coast due to the occurrence of a deep undersea canyon not far offshore. It's a home to giant squid and therefore attracts Sperm Whales which feed on them. There are also Dusky Dolphin here. These are smaller than the Bottlenose Dolphin I am used to seeing and very active and fun to watch. I think maybe I overdid the dolphin content a touch. Sorry :) Then it's off again the next day on the train to Picton where we are going to cross to the North Island via ferry. I'll save the crossing for the next video as it will serve as a good intoduction to the North Island. So this video is the end of our ten days in the South Island. I have to admit that it's a lovely place and we only scratched the surface. There was a lot we didn't see. I get the feeling that I'll be back... #travel #newzealand #kaikoura #whale #dolphin
