This past weekend, I won the bronze medal in the advanced cutting tournament at the Rose City Classic in Portland, Oregon. Lee Smith won the gold medal and Julian Schuetze took home the silver medal. The final round had two feats. I think more were planned, but there wasn't time for the others. The first involved cuts through three tatami mats. I performed a descending true edge cut, followed by an ascending false edge cuts and finally an ascending true edge cut. The second feat is something that I am very excited to see in a cutting tournament: cuts on a linen wrapped target. A single tatami mat was wrapped in 2 layers of linen. Cuts were scored based in their difficulty. A sturtzhau (plunging false edge cut) was worth the maximum: 4 points. Complex false edge cuts, such as a scheilhau or sotani, were worth 3 points. Basic true edge cuts were worth either 2 point (e.g. mittlehau) or one point (e.g. oberhau). I first performed a sturtzhau, followed by descending false edge cuts from the right and left, and then sotanis from the right and left. I hope to see more linen cutting feats like this in future cutting tournaments!
