In this embryology lecture, Professor Zach Murphy walks you through the development of the respiratory system, from the initial formation of the laryngotracheal diverticulum to the maturation of the alveoli. This lecture highlights how a complex and highly organized airway system forms from a simple outpouching of the foregut. We begin by examining how the respiratory diverticulum buds from the ventral wall of the foregut, and how the tracheoesophageal septum separates it from the esophagus. Zach then explains the sequential branching of the bronchial tree, from primary bronchi to terminal bronchioles, emphasizing the timing and stages of lung development—pseudoglandular, canalicular, saccular, and alveolar phases. The lecture also reviews the formation of the pleural cavities, pulmonary vasculature, and surfactant production by type II pneumocytes. Correction: At 27:31 in this lecture, there is an error regarding the number of tertiary (segmental) bronchi. The correct anatomy is: 10 tertiary bronchi on the right 8-10 tertiary bronchi on the left Enjoy the lecture and support us below! 🌐 Official Links Website: https://www.ninjanerd.org Podcast: https://podcast.ninjanerd.org Store: https://merch.ninjanerd.org 📱 Social Media / ninjanerdlectures / ninjanerdlectures / ninjanerdlectures https://x.com/ninjanerdsci/ / ninja-nerd 💬 Join Our Community Discord: / discord #ninjanerd #DevelopmentofRespiratorySystem #Embryology
