Moving to contain the fallout from the recent mining tragedy, the State government on Monday ordered the constitution of a judicial inquiry commission and directed district authorities to immediately clamp down on all illegal coal mining activities across the state. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said a judicial inquiry will be instituted into the incident and that the process will begin once a chairman is appointed. He indicated that the commission will conduct a detailed investigation to ascertain the circumstances leading to the tragedy. He further stated that in light of the High Court taking suo motu cognisance of illegal coal mining, the government is intensifying its enforcement drive. District administrations have been instructed to go all out to ensure that illegal activities are immediately stopped. He added that the government will file its affidavit before the High Court within ten days. On the ground, rescue operations at the affected mine are continuing. Tynsong said that although no bodies were recovered today, personnel have been directed to thoroughly examine the site to determine whether anyone remains trapped or if additional bodies are yet to be located. Responding to reports that the government was aware of illegal mining activities, he maintained that action has been taken whenever incidents have occurred. He pointed out that the latest case is in a remote interior area that takes three to four hours to reach even by four-wheel drive, underscoring the difficult terrain and operational challenges faced by police personnel.
