We went into this expecting a standard horror film — but this movie had us on edge the entire time. The Super 8 segments were creepy but it gave the film such a unique aesthetic. Between the disturbing atmosphere, Ethan Hawke’s terrifying performance as The Grabber, and the emotional heart at the center of the story, The Black Phone delivers tension, fear, and even hope in ways we didn’t see coming. The story follows Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy who’s kidnapped by a sadistic masked killer known as The Grabber. Locked in a soundproof basement, Finney begins receiving mysterious phone calls from a disconnected black rotary phone — with voices belonging to The Grabber’s past victims. As the calls grow more urgent, Finney realizes they may be his only hope for escape. Meanwhile, his sister Gwen experiences haunting visions that might lead her to save him… if time doesn’t run out first.
