MetroTV, The port of Chancay in Peru, built by China’s state-owned shipping company Cosco, aims to close its first year of operations by consolidating itself as a South American hub for trade with Asia, deputy general manager Gonzalo Rios said on Tuesday. Aerial footage shows the port facilities located about 80 km from the Peruvian capital, Lima, considered the largest in the country. Ríos explained that since Chancay began operations, Cosco has established a direct weekly route with China. The journey takes 23 days, which translates into a significant reduction in time and costs for exports and imports with Asia across the region. "This means an opportunity for those who need to place fresh products in a consumer market that is growing larger and larger," he stressed. The deputy general manager noted that "19 countries are currently investing in the Peruvian port system." "We believe that the Asian market uses an entry point in one of the countries, and in the case of Latin America, why not Peru — particularly Chancay, and also Callao — which increasingly represent greater opportunities," he explained. Chancay port has been operating for less than a year: it began in November 2024 and is owned 60% by Cosco and 40% by the Peruvian mining company Volcan. He also emphasized that the port’s operability has allowed even populations from the country’s interior to join "productive activities to take advantage of the markets that are opening up." Rios pointed out that in its first months of operation, most shipments leaving for China have been Peruvian agricultural exports — including blueberries and avocados. On the other side, the main imports from China have been consumer goods such as automobiles and retail products. The Chancay port complex is part of the strategic Belt and Road Initiative, which has gained even greater momentum due to the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on several countries, including Peru. With a portion of exports that once went to the United States now being redirected, both Peru and other countries in the region are increasingly turning to Asia — blueberries being a prime example of this trend. #ChancayPort #Cosco #AsianTrade #BeltAndRoadInitiative #AgriculturalExports #PeruChina ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow juga sosmed kami untuk mendapatkan update informasi terkini!
